How Dictionary Data Is Used
Every word returned by Word Unscrambler comes from a real, traceable dictionary source. We do not generate, invent, or "fill in" words. This page explains exactly which word list we use, why, and how it relates to the dictionaries used by specific games.
The word list
We use the ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) word list — an open, widely-used English word list containing ~170,000 entries. ENABLE is the foundation of many open-source word games (including the original Words With Friends dictionary) and is derived from public dictionary sources.
Why ENABLE?
- Open and traceable. Every entry is publicly documented; nothing is invented.
- Broad coverage. Covers the vast majority of words that appear in mainstream word games.
- Cache-friendly. Small enough to load in your browser for instant, offline results after first load.
Game-dictionary compatibility
Each game uses its own official dictionary. Our list overlaps heavily with most, but not perfectly:
| Game | Official dictionary | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Scrabble (North America) | TWL06 / OTCWL | High |
| Scrabble (International) | SOWPODS / Collins | Partial — SOWPODS is larger |
| Words With Friends | Zynga proprietary list | High (shared ENABLE roots) |
| Wordscapes / Word Cookies | Proprietary casual list | High |
| Boggle / Jumble | Standard English dictionaries | High |
How data is stored and processed
- The word list is bundled as a static asset and loaded once by your browser.
- Search runs entirely in-browser. Letters and filters never leave your device.
- We do not store your queries, results, or letter history on any server.
