How WordUnscramble.uk Works

Word Unscrambler is designed to be the fastest way to turn a jumble of letters into a full list of valid English words. Here's exactly how it works, end to end.

1. You type letters

Enter up to 16 letters in the input on the home page. Case doesn't matter. You can use ? or * as wildcards to represent blank tiles from Scrabble or Words With Friends.

2. The dictionary loads in your browser

On first visit, we load the open-source ENABLE English word list (~170,000 words) directly into your browser. Nothing you type ever leaves your device — the entire search runs locally.

3. We compute every valid sub-anagram

For every dictionary word, we check whether its letters can be built from the ones you supplied — respecting letter counts, and treating each wildcard as any single letter. The result is every real word you can make from your tiles, no fabricated entries.

4. Optional filters refine the list

  • Starts with / Ends with — match specific prefixes or suffixes.
  • Contains — require a substring anywhere in the word.
  • Required letter(s) — force one or more letters to appear.
  • Word length — restrict results to a specific length.

5. Multi-word solutions (optional)

Toggle Multi-word to search for combinations of two shorter words that together use your letters — perfect for Wordscapes, Boggle, and anagram puzzles.

6. Results are grouped and ranked

Words are grouped by length (longest first) so you can find the highest-scoring plays quickly. Total counts and per-length counts help you see the shape of the answer at a glance.
