Wordle vs Quordle vs Octordle: Adapting Your Strategy

Why the best Wordle opener is a bad Octordle opener, with letter-coverage tables for each format.

Same rules, different maths

Wordle is one board with six guesses. Quordle is four boards with nine guesses. Octordle is eight boards with thirteen guesses. The letter grids look identical, but the strategy inversion is complete: what wins one costs you the other.

In Wordle you optimise for expected information per guess and commit early. In Octordle you optimise for coverage across many boards and delay commitment for as long as possible.

The coverage-vs-commitment inversion

A "great" Wordle guess two is CLOUD after a STARE opener with mostly greys — five fresh letters, sharp narrowing on one board. In Octordle, CLOUD after STARE means you've spent two of your thirteen guesses on the same five-letter probe pattern for all eight boards, and you still don't have enough coverage to solve any single board.

Octordle's optimal opening is a three-word coverage set: STARE + CLOUD + POINT covers S T A R E C L O U D P I N — thirteen distinct letters — before you commit to a single board. Only after all three are played do you start solving boards individually.

Letter-coverage table (approximate frequencies among common Wordle-length answers, top 15 letters by usage — treat these as rough guides, not sourced statistics):

  • E (~11%), A (~9%), R (~8%), O (~7%), T (~7%), L (~6%), I (~6%), S (~6%), N (~6%), U (~5%), C (~5%), Y (~4%), H (~4%), D (~3%), P (~3%)

STARE + CLOUD + POINT together contain E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N, U, C, D and P — so of the top 15 they miss only Y and H. A single fourth probe of HYMNS picks up both (H, Y, M, N, S). BADLY is not a substitute here — it repeats letters you already have and, crucially, contains no H.

Scrabble point values for the coverage set (computed from standard tile values):

  • STARE: S1 + T1 + A1 + R1 + E1 = 5 pts
  • CLOUD: C3 + L1 + O1 + U1 + D2 = 8 pts
  • POINT: P3 + O1 + I1 + N1 + T1 = 7 pts
  • HYMNS: H4 + Y4 + M3 + N1 + S1 = 13 pts

Quordle: the middle ground

Quordle sits between them. Nine guesses for four boards means two probes then commit. STARE + CLOUD is standard; the third guess is board-dependent. If one board has 4 greens after two probes, solve it (guess 3). If none do, play POINT and start solving.

The Quordle risk: solving the "easy" board too early wastes a coverage guess. Discipline is not solving a board just because you can. If board A has one clear candidate and board D has zero information, spend guess three on a D-relevant probe, not the A-answer.

Octordle: the delayed-commit endgame

Octordle rewards patience so extreme it feels wrong. Play STARE, CLOUD, POINT for every board no matter what greens appear — you cannot afford to commit early. Board-specific solves start on guess four at the earliest. Even then, prioritise boards with 3+ greens; leave 1-green boards for later coverage guesses.

The Octordle failure mode: playing a "smart" guess-two based on what board 3 revealed. That wastes six other boards' worth of probe information. Our Wordle solver trains the single-board instincts you'll need to unlearn.

Practical drills

For each format, the drill is different:

  • Wordle: rehearse guess two under different opener responses. Use the pattern search to build intuition for candidate counts.
  • Quordle: force yourself to play two full probes before solving. Track how often the third-guess solve was actually optimal.
  • Octordle: play three fixed probes every game for a week. Your average will drop 2–3 guesses.

Timing your commitment

The common thread across all three games is when to switch from probing to solving. That single decision determines your average.

  • Wordle: switch after guess two, latest guess three.
  • Quordle: switch after guess two on each board individually.
  • Octordle: switch after guess three, never earlier.

Switching early feels productive (you're "making progress") but it costs you information for the boards you haven't solved yet. Switching late feels wasteful (you had a clear answer!) but it maintains coverage.

Concrete Octordle opening: STARE + CLOUD + POINT

Assume you play these three probes on all eight Octordle boards. What's the typical state after guess three?

  • 2–3 boards have 3+ greens and are solvable on guess four.
  • 3–4 boards have 1–2 greens and need one more probe or careful commit.
  • 1–2 boards have 0 greens — rare once you've spent 13 distinct letters.

The remaining 10 guesses go to solving the 3-green boards first, then the 1-green boards. Boards with 0 greens get a fourth probe (HYMNS) before any commitment.

Rack management analogy

Multi-board Wordle is like Scrabble with a shared rack across multiple boards. You cannot make eight local decisions — you must make one global one. This is why single-board Wordle experts often struggle with Octordle at first: their instincts are locally correct but globally wrong.

Our Wordle solver is a single-board tool, but running it on a candidate list mentally simulates the multi-board decision.

FAQs

Q: Is STARE still the best opener for Octordle? A: Yes, but it's now guess one of three, not one of two. The whole opening set matters more than any single word.

Q: What if I only play Wordle? A: Then ignore coverage sets — they're strictly worse for a single board. See the best opening words for single-board optimisation.

Q: Does hard mode exist for Quordle/Octordle? A: Quordle has a "sequence" mode with stricter rules, but no true hard mode. Octordle's coverage requirements are already so tight that hard-mode discipline would make it nearly unsolvable.

Q: Are there 16-board or 32-board variants? A: Yes — Sedecordle (16 boards) and Duotrigordle (32 boards) exist. Strategy compresses further: four or five probes before any commitment.

Q: Do coverage sets exist for six-letter variants? A: Yes, though they're less studied. Six-letter coverage triples (for example STAIRS + CLOUDY + a third six-letter probe rich in P/M/H/Y) work on the same principle, but the six-letter answer vocabulary matters more than the letter mix.
