Introduction

A double-letter word has two of the same letter side by side — BOOK, ADDRESS, SUCCESS. English is full of them: OO and EE are the most common vowel pairs, while double consonants like SS, LL, TT, NN and FF show up in the majority of medium-length words. Doubling is often a spelling rule (the CVC-doubling rule when adding -ED or -ING) and sometimes a Latin or Greek inheritance (COMMITTEE, ATTITUDE).

This page lists hundreds of double-letter words, from the everyday to the tournament-legal. Every word is verified against the ENABLE dictionary and cross-checked against Scrabble tournament lists.

Tips

  • Double-letter words are common in games — nearly one word in three has a double.
  • The CVC rule doubles a final consonant before -ED/-ING when the vowel is short: STOP → STOPPED, RUN → RUNNING.
  • OO is the most common vowel double: BOOK, LOOK, MOON, ROOM, POOL.
  • SS, LL, TT, EE and OO account for over 70% of all doubles.
  • Triple-letter combinations are extremely rare and mostly compound (BOOKKEEPER has KK, GODDESSSHIP is not standard).
  • Learn the -ILL, -ELL, -OLL, -ULL endings — they anchor dozens of short high-frequency words.

Word patterns

  • OO: BOOK, MOON, ROOM, ZOO, POOL, GOOD
  • EE: FREE, TREE, SEE, BEE, KNEE, AGREE
  • SS: MISS, BOSS, PRESS, ADDRESS, SUCCESS
  • LL: BELL, BALL, CALL, FALL, WILL, PILL
  • TT: LETTER, BETTER, LITTLE, ATTACK, BUTTON
  • MM: SUMMER, HAMMER, COMMON, COMMENT, GRAMMAR
  • NN: ANNUAL, DINNER, MANNER, TENNIS, CONNECT

Popular uses

  • Scrabble — the S is only worth 1 point but doubles like SS give bingo potential.
  • Wordle — knowing common double-letter patterns rules out or in candidates fast.
  • Spelling bees — doubling errors (OMMISION vs OMISSION) are the top mistake.
  • Teaching phonics — doubled consonants signal the short-vowel sound that precedes them.

Frequently asked questions

What word has the most double letters?

BOOKKEEPER is famous for three doubles in a row (OO, KK, EE). BOOKKEEPING has the same. In everyday text, ADDRESSEE and COMMITTEE both stack multiple doubles.

Why does English double consonants before -ED and -ING?

To preserve the short vowel sound. STOPING would read with a long O; STOPPING keeps the O short. This is called the CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) doubling rule.

Are double-letter words worth more in Scrabble?

No — each tile scores its face value. But doubles help you use up common letters (S, T, L, E) that would otherwise clog your rack.

What's the longest common double-letter word?

Words like RESPONSIBILITY, ADDITIONALLY and MISCELLANEOUS all carry double letters and run 14–17 letters long.
