Tips

  • Learn the 2-letter words first — XI, XU, JO are worth their weight in gold. QI and ZA are Collins- and WWF-valid but aren't in our ENABLE list.
  • Every 2-letter word can be used as a parallel hook in Scrabble — that's how you score with the plays your opponent leaves open.
  • The high-value 2-letter words all involve rare letters: QI (Q, Collins/WWF only), XI/XU (X), ZA (Z, Collins only), JO (J).
  • 3-letter words with high-value letters (JOE, JOB, ZAP, ZOO, WAX, HEX) let you dump a Q, Z, X or J profitably.
  • Wordle openers are always 5 letters — but the 3-letter list teaches you common consonant + vowel patterns fast.

Word patterns

  • 2-letter Q word: QI (Collins/WWF only — not in ENABLE)
  • 2-letter X words: XI, XU, AX, EX, OX
  • 2-letter Z words: ZA, ZO (Collins-valid; not in ENABLE)
  • 2-letter J words: JO
  • 3-letter high-scorers: ZAP, ZIP, JAB, JOB, JOE, JAW

Popular uses

  • Scrabble parallel plays — score two words at once with any 2-letter hook.
  • Words With Friends — the 2-letter list is nearly identical.
  • Boggle — short words are your bulk score.
  • Wordle — 3-letter patterns train your ear for common consonant clusters.

Frequently asked questions

How many 2-letter words are legal in Scrabble?

127 in the Collins Scrabble Words comparison set we ship. Our ENABLE list contains 96.

Is 'I' a valid Scrabble word?

No — Scrabble requires at least 2 letters. A, I and O are not playable on their own.

What's the highest-scoring 2-letter word?

Within ENABLE, six two-letter words tie at 9 points before board bonuses: AX, EX, JO, OX, XI and XU. QI and ZA score 11 on their letters alone but are not in ENABLE — they are in Collins Scrabble Words. Always check the specific list your game uses.

Are these lists the same in Words With Friends?

Very close but not identical — WWF uses its own list, which accepts QI and ZA. Our ENABLE-based list omits both.
